A very nice , well formed 1Y – O trumpet Lawrence , – the great work from Fred Silcock unfortunately did not get the recognition he deserved outside Australia .
The show season , and my hayfever season , are well away in the North Island and bulbs are moving quickly down south .We have had a very wet winter and record rainfall in August . The bulb patches are very wet and the growth is very soft .Tall stems and the big doubles are falling over . DAFFODIL DAY was last Friday and most suppliers met their contracts .
Here are a few more from two different crosses , – both with Uncle Duncan as the seed parent ..Small flowers as they were planted out late , – and previous Uncle Duncan seedling have been very neat but never large .Will mark them but not lift this summer , – will be better next season .
UNCLE DUNCAN – X – OTAKI LIGHTS – – Two flowers picked from the poly trays they have been in for quite a while .
UNCLE DUNCAN – X – [ CORBIERE – X – LAPHROAIG ] This Corbiere sdlg was not quite trumpet but the best of the cross from Laphroaig .LAPHROAIG is the brightest redcup I have seen , – with a very deep edge .Always hoping the colour will come through .
Another that is a large cup , looks overcupped but best colour and very short neck .
Always good when the trumpet is showing as the bud pops – also good short necks on these two , – and most others from Uncle Duncan that have flowered .
Double 4Y – RR . The brightest colour I have in a double . Not big , 90 mm or tall but very strong stem and firm neck .Last week when the Kiwi Sunsets went down in the rain , – this guy was standing proud Breeding – LAPHROAIG – X – KIWI SUNSET . Will register as ?
Another rather odd cross , chasing coloured trumpets . .I have always loved the rich pink of mature CATALYST and PINK SILK pollen was available .quite a mix in the seedlings but no true trumpets .An interesting colour range but form not very good .CATALYST – X – PINK SILK .
Most of these are first season planted out after about 6 years in poly trays ., – planted out in May . Will be better , stronger , next season .
Meet the neighbours , – their big feet are in a few of the photos as the seedling line is about a metre inside the boundry fence .No long neck damage yet but Murphys Law usually has it that if there is a cracker , – they will find it .
WAYNE HUGHES , 1Y – O SEEDLING .
