Livermore show – Classics awards

There is a new section with new awards for classic daffodils. These are defined to be standard
daffodil cultivar registered between 1940 and 1969 (inclusive). There are 4 ADS awards –
(1) best daffodil in the section, (2) best daffodil exhibited in single stem classes in the
section, (3) best set of 3 in the section, and (4) best collection of 5 in the section. This is a
brand new section in the show and did not draw many entries, but it will catch on as people
realize the section exists to give recognition to older though not historic cultivars. For this
first show, the winner of both best in section and best in single stem class was Kenellis 10W-W
(1948) exhibited by Ben Blake & Nancy Tackett. Yes, Kenellis is a standard because it was purged
from the approved miniatures list. The winner of the set of 3 was Ice Follies 2W-W (1953).
(All right, stop that snickering!) These three traveled to the Livermore show from Lynchburg, Virginia.
Student Judge Janet Hickman not only traveled across the country to attend our show
but also brought daffodils! Thanks for remembering the new Classics section.

  1. Yes, Kirby, I snickered also. I consider Ice Follies nearly a weed in my garden, but it was the only one of my many Classics blooming for what was for me a very early show.
Thank you for taking the picture.

  2. But I just have to snicker! All you people who hate Ice Follies should
stop taking swipes at it ! I happen to be rather fond of it since it
was always one of the first to bloom for me in Maryland and showed up
proudly against a south wall to say “It’s Spring!” Ethel Smith in

  3. Janet,

    Way to Go.!!!
I hope you have an Ice Follies for us at the ADS Judging School II. I’ve had special requests for it. LOL

  4. I have a judging question –
Are flowers which win one of the new Classics awards eligible to go on for other awards, such as Best in Show?

I’m glad that we have this group of awards now, as these should be daffs that the general public are able to get easily.

  5. Ice Follies qualifies in my fields, but not at my mothers
house where everyone save myself like it…

  6. As chairman of the committee which proposed the Classics in the first place:
    YES!
Classics are just standard cultivars from a special time period, judged by the same standard as every other standard, except Historics. That’s the key. And therefore the Classic five-stem blue ribbon collection is eligible for the Purple Ribbon,

  7. I should have mentioned this in connection with the new Classics section at ADS daffodil shows.
The classics (standards registered between 1940 and1969 inclusive) are to be judged using
the same point scale as other standard cultivars and would therefore be eligible for the Gold
and White Ribbons. Admittedly we were very lenient at the Livermore show in order to get this
    new section into play.

  8. Theresa,

I understand there is no restrictions on Classic going forward for everything that they can be considered for, including purple, white, and best in show “Gold” becasue they are judged to the same standards as all other standards.
