Barco Daffodil Show March 26

It was Easter and I thought that we would have a poor showing.  I was wrong, but I will have to post our show later as because of Easter our photographer will not be able to get me the photographs until after he is away for 5 days taking care of an ill relative.  Secondly my Sheets with all the winners names and cultivars are in “the truck” that cannot be here until Monday because of Easter commitments.  I didn’t think about that when we loaded the truck.  Plus I’m in that “factor” that I have two more shows next week, Garden Club of Virginia in Hampton, VA and Virginia Daffodil Society in Richmond.  Another of those 3 shows in 8 days situation. Followed by the World Convention the week after.

Loyce dont’ read any further! :-)  Our show in Barco, NC kicked off the Mid-Atlantic region daffodil show as is normal for us.  We had a great collection of Mid-Atlantic Judges that showed up for there first contact with daffodils this year.  Janet Hickman, Glenna Graves, Nancy Fuchs, Skip Ford, Katherine Beale, and Laura Ann Brooks all showed up with a large amount of daffodils to show.  Other judges showed up with a few.  Richard Ezell only had a hand full of daffodils but that was enough to capture the Purple Ribbon.  All the judges were able to win major ADS Ribbons in the collection classes.  The Premier and the Quinn were not awarded, but four of the Quinn daffodils were on the front table of 14 for consideration of the Gold Ribbon.  The two finalist were from the Quinn with Muster losing to Magic Lantern.  In the Mid-Atlantic you don’t win the Quinn with 24 daffodils of 90 or better point flowers.  The Quinn has to be in his new tuxedo and look like he just stepped of the front page of a magazine. :-)

I was very happy with the show of over 839 daffodils, 412 exhibits and 30 exhibitors, even when I had to settle for one ribbon, the Silver. :-) Also happy to have been awarded the Rose, and Mini Rose, the Gold and the mini Gold.  The mini Gold was ‘Suzy Q’ I am so proud when my children are recognized.

I will post pictures, etc when I get all the photographs and the list of winners collected in one place.

Happy show time everyone.

  1. Clay, in Indiana, we call the Silver ribbon, the Little Piggy – for the gluttonous exhibitor. :) Congratulations on your Piggy.  And of course, the ultra-tiny, ultra easy-to-grow gorgeous Suzy Q.  Nice name! :)  It sounds like a very fun show with all the judges duking it out for the ribbons.  Gotta love it!

    See you soon,

    Suzy

  2. Suzy,

Thank you for the comments.  Our show is mostly locals that are gardeners more than daffodil showers.  I appreciate the judges “duking” it out for ribbons as it helps fill out my show.  Otherwise there would be few collections for the visitors to see during the public showing period.  I win the silver ribbon, the piggy award, mostly because I have a “home field” advantage with all my small grower members.  If a judge brought more daffodils than I have to show, they’d have to use a tractor trailer to get them all here.

In the last two shows, GCV and Richmond, I avoided the piggy award by only entering large collections and using up my daffodils that way.  Didn’t win much but I supported the shows.

Glad you like ‘Suzy Q’, and I’m also glad I named it.  I thought it was just too small originally and almost deleted it.

    Clay
