Unknown Daffodils

Hi daffnet,

trying to get ready for Williamsburg next year, I have been trying to reconcile my planted daffodils over the last couple of weeks to insure that I have the proper names and color codes according to DAFFSEEK and I came up with some “real” questions. I even found one daffodil that was not in the Book Daffodils to Show and Grow, but was not in DAFFSEEK -Knob Hill. However this one has been around for many years. The late Wayne Steele was the best grower of them that I knew. He sent me my start that I still have.

Does anyone know the name of a daffodil listed as El Passo 2W-W: or Wong 2W-Y. I picked these up at bulb exchanges. El Passo I could not get even a hint in Daffseek or the book Daffodils to show and grow. Wong I did not find but found three other daffodils with Wong as part of their name.

Any ideas? I would appreciate the feed back.

Thanks in advance,

Clay

  1. Hi Clay,

Could your Knob Hill be ‘Nob Hill’ 2 YYW-Y bred by Sid DuBose?  I’ve no idea about the others.

  2. Hello Clay,

Your Wong is probably Wyong 2w-y a really nice cultivar from David Jackson. You will like it .

    Best Wishes.

  3. Hi Clay,

Could your El Passo, be ‘El Paso‘ spelled like the Texas city?  It is a 2 Y-O  from the Netherlands.

  4. Hi,
I want to thank everyone that responded to my post. I think have resolved all of them: There is a place spelled Knob Hill, not too far from San Francisco, but I’m sure that Mary Lou with correct in Nob Hill as I looked it up on daffnet an it looks like the one I have. For years I’ve had that one named wrong.

Larry, Wyong seems to be the correct spelling. I usually try multiple varieties of spelling before I give up – but I didn’t get this one.

Nancy we will try El Paso 2Y-O however, since I had 2W-W I’m leave in decision open until it blooms. It it’s 2Y-O the mystery is solved. However, if it’s 2W-W I will still have an unknown daffodil.

Thanks for all the quick help. I always correct my list to make sure it is correct. I’m always being asked how I can put so many daffodils into a show. You can’t if you have to look up each one of them at the time for the show. I validate my list, by bed or location planted, and in the spring I simply look at my corrected list and compare the planted location and I have the daffodil, and color code. I’m ready to groom and put into the show. Sometimes a little double checking at the show helps!!!

    thanks again,

    Clay

  5. Hi Clay

If  El Passo still turns out to be all white when it flowers try Empress of Ireland> It is a shot in the dark but it is really a division 2 though registered as a 1 and quite often my labels lose the last part of the name when in the ground.

  6. Hi James,
I’ve very familiar with Empress of Ireland as I have grown it for years. So if it looks like Empress of Ireland, I will be on it. Thanks. I get the opinion that this one is a “true” division 2, not one that looks like a failed division 1. I will know when it blooms next year. If I remember and have time I will post again on the subject.

    Thanks,
