Here is a clump of a daffodil that was given to be from one of the old cut-flower farms in NC by a “New” member of the NE NC Daffodil Society who said it was King Alfred.  It’s obviously early and I have reasons to think that it is not KING ALFRED.  It’s cup is more orange than yellow, however, we have had one of our strange “freezes” in Northeastern NC.  A lot of daffodils laid done on the ground during/after the freeze.  Most are back up now.  However, cold can affect color.

  1. I would bet these are Fortune. The cup will mature a darker “orange” color but never really get more than a dark gold. Interesting that when the flower is dead and dried that the color of the trumpet intensifies the pigment and you will swear that this dried flower had to be from a very dark orange trumpet. Keith Kridler Mt. Pleasant, Texas fields and bulbs flooded with 2&1/2″ of rainfall in just an hour Saturday night.

  2. Cup is not correct for King Alfred…….. waist / base is not tight, mouth is too expanded and length is not long enough in proportion to perianth which appear not have any twist to the segments…………
     
    I would not show it as a King Alfred………
