today in Ohio–Erythronium

The first Erythronium americanum (I’m guessing they’re americanum–they grow wild here in the woods) is in bloom today.  There are a gazillion leaves everywhere, but only about a dozen flowers.  I’ve tried potting up some of the non-blooming ones hoping to “grow” them up, to no avail.  So I just enjoy the few blooms out of all proportion to their size or quantity.

On my wooded hillsides about a dozen miles south of Mary Lou, the Erythronium dens canis opened first. These are a whitish flower with tinges of lavender. About a week later the yellow-flowered americanum opened along the wood drive the past few days. These are two of the prettiest native plants in this area (SW Ohio). In addition, the trilliums have buds and the bloodroots are fully open.

  2. Right, the bloodroots have been open for awhile.  I bought a double one once, but it didn’t last very long.  And my trilliums struggle, but they’re ones I bought, not native to my woods.

  3. Hi Bill and all,
I thought Erythronium dens-canis was native to Southern Europe not Ohio.

The double bloodroot is quite particular. We have had one for several years that gives us a a couple small blooms. The pink one has already bloomed but the double just opened today. I think we have replaced the double one a couple times. Do I recall that Dave Burdick offered it once?
