Carey Quinn

Friends,
We who grow, show, and judge daffodils should remember Judge Quinn’s comment, “It is the responsibility of the judge to award blue ribbons not withhold them.”  If we follow Judge Quinn’s comment, we are all going to enjoy growing, showing, and judging daffodils. I do not have an actual reference to Judge Quinn’s comment; however, when I was President of ADS (1986 – 88) and presiding over a board meeting, a motion was made to raise the points required to win an ADS ribbon to some value above 90.  Through a parliamentary maneuver, I was able to step aside from the podium and address the board members by quoting Judge Quinn.  For a moment, the silence was deafening. Then, Dr. Bill Bender stood and said, “And I heard him say it.”  The motion was either tabled, withdrawn, or defeated.  I don’t remember. It was a long time ago.  Nonetheless, the points required to win an ADS ribbon remains at 90.  That is as it should be!
