Late Flowers

Hello All,

Here are the last few to flower at Matangi.  The first is GUY WILSON.  This has to be the best white to come out of the UK for many years.  A masterpiece from John Pearson.  As you can see an earwig liked it too!  I will freeze the pollen for next year!

The second is Ladymeads from Noel Burr – I have had better examples of this one; however it only opened yesterday and will mature beautifully.

The third photo is a trio of pinks –at top Royal China from Clive Postles, on left Clouds Rest and right Soprano both from Brian Duncan.  The photo is a bit misleading – the top flower is actually much larger than the other two, the biggest I’ve seen of this variety which reflects the season.  The other two were picked early to make up the vase.

It has been a very hard season – rained 85 days out of ninety up to the Late Show – finally cleared last week to allow spraying of rose beds – too late the downy mildew is already apparent.  I spent a lot of time slipping and sliding on the muddy tracks.  Spraying was difficult so earwigs and other pests had a field day. However, the flowers that got through were very good and did well on the show bench.  Not quite the worst season ever ….

Because of the rain made fewer crosses than usual – only got to forty but all seem to have taken.  Hope there are a lot of seeds in each pod!

Cheers,

Peter
