N. jonquilla color break

Daffnet,

In the last few years I have been very active in competiting for the mini and standard Rose Ribbons.  This year I have had to make a hard decision.  All my miniature Div 7 miniature daffodils I have been hybridizing from N. jonquilla from a commercial source (I don’t remember where the 1st stock came from) had to go.

The point of the story is that on first bloom I was getting some very interesting heavy substance on my miniature div 7. After the first bloom, the trouble begin.  All of the miniature stock after first bloom, came back with white color breaking up the petals from top to bottom.  This weekend I had to rogue them all out and destroy the entire stock.

I look at it as a set back, but with the help of Keith Kriedler who sent me some different varieties of N. jonquilla from his stock a couple of years ago I am hoping for better results in my future breeding.  I am also useing other varieties of N. jonquilla, including N. cordubensis, henriquesii, fernandesii, assoanus, rupicola and others that I had accumulated.  I’ve not seen any of the color that Harold gets when he uses these same N. jonquilla in crosses.  However, time will tell.

The N. jonquilla “tribes” seen to like it down here in the Eastern Coastline of NC.  So do the bulbocodiums and division 8 daffodils.  N. cyclamineus needs to have help with added water and shade across our long dry summers.

In anguish with losing so many of my precious miniature seedlings.
