Yesterday, we were honoured to be able to visit the young Emperor Penguin (ex Antarctica) that is currently visiting the Kapiti Coastal beach at Peka Peka, not far from Otaki. This is the area that John McLennan and other hybridists source names for new varieties from, so maybe it will feature in this years’ crop of seedling names! I certainly noticed the slight golden tinge/ blush on it’s front white bib when it turned in the sun.
The Penguin seemed well but the unusually hot winter temperatures ( midday – 15’C ) is not suiting it at all today so experts are checking it out now. Volunteers are rostered on and all are treating it with the greatest respect. I’ve selected 4 photos for your enjoyment.
1. Kapiti Island in the background and the ‘boundary’ fence.
2. Proof that I was there. (A unique birthday treat for me – that was never mentioned in the Beatles hit “When I’m ….. “)
3. Even penguins can have droopy necks!
Love penquins. Just took youngest two grandchildren to see “Mr. Propper’s Penquins” last week. It is a delightful film.
