not daffodils

Friends,
No daffodils blooming in Ohio, but the first white cyclamen is in bloom.  These lycoris got beat up in the rain yesterday, but it’s still nice to see a bloom.

  1. Mary Lou,

The lycoris are in full bloom here in Maryland. They are looking good. I’m the one feeling all beat up!!!

  2. Naked ladies or Surprise lilies have been blooming here for a few  weeks.

I was told Brent Heath’s father, George, like to call  Summer Amaryllis Naked Ladies.

Once I saw an article on them in Southern Living magazine and they called them Surprise Lilies.  Last Sunday I heard someone call them resurrection lilies.  It seems this flower has many names.  Do you know more?

  3. Hello,

Naked Ladies are, I suppose, Amaryllis belladonna. This name comes from the Italian “bella donna” = “beautiful woman”. The name was object of a lot of controversy between botanist because of an error made by Linnaeus in 1753, who mixed up the Amaryllis from South Africa, known in Italy and Europe since centuries, with the amaryllids from the New World, now classified as Hippeastrum (since Herbert in the early 19th century) but still known to many in the florist and nursery trades as “Amaryllis”.

Due to unusual rains in July this year, Amaryllis belladonna is already in flower in these days in central Italy. I took some photos yesterday:

In Italy (Naples) this plant is known also as “Femmina nuda” = “Naked female”, but I think the name officially present in the botanical denomination is so much nicer.

Very interesting developments in Amaryllis selection have been achieved in Australia and I included these findings in the page

With all the limitations of Google translation, it can be read also in “English”, but at least the many photos do not change.

    Best regards

    Henry, near Rome Italy
