Plant related but off topic – Deer Guard

I wanted to pass along to those of you who use the Deer Guard/Tree Guard product to repel deer, that EPA labeling regulations and the recession have forced the small company making it out of business.

United Spray Systems “bugpage.com” of Minnesota still has some of the quart size, as may some other retailers.

This is the product I use to protect my evergreens over Winter and into the Spring and the only effective product I’ve ever found for deer.  It’s a bitter tasting solution suspended in a latex-related product so it doesn’t wash off for over four months.  If you’re a fan, get it now while you still can. (No toxicity has been found but can not be used on food crops because of the pervasive bitter taste).

I learned of this product from Schnormeier Gardens an extraordinary private garden near Gambier, Ohio which grows a large number of rare conifers.

It’s well worth hitting up some of the few public days each year.
