‘Wiyot’ in Minnesota

Pictured is ‘Wiyot’ from Michael Berrigan’s greenhouse in balmy Minnesota.

I tried to attach the complete Minnesota’s Winter newsletter containing five
photos by Michael, but Nancy Tackett had to explain that its size overshot
the maximum allowed on Daffnet. I am passing these pictures along with
Michael Berrigan’s permission so that you can see some of the flowers he
grows. The very last picture is his seedling that won Rose, White and Gold
ribbons at our Show last May.

We don’t yet have much snow-a dusting this morning that will melt as
temperatures will get near 40 degrees F. by Sunday/Monday. This is
unseasonably warm for the middle of the continent at this time of year as we
usually have huge arctic air masses dip down from Canada between the two
continental mountain ranges. Last year at this time we had 18″of snow on
the ground. About every five years we have a “brown Christmas” so this isn’t
unheard of, just pleasantly enjoyable not to have to shovel all the time.
Ice fishermen have been stranded on floating ice floes and a few cars and
snowmobiles/ATV’s have gone through the lake ice throughout the state. The
ground is barely frozen and the ski places and hockey rinks are struggling
to maintain appropriate surfaces.
