4th Gen. N. jonquilla – Sort of yes, but not really

This is V04-92-57 a clonal Selection of my fourth generation selfing and crossing of carefully chosen species Narcissus jonquilla. Original crosses were from 1986 and were made between the best forms of Grant Mitsch’s N. jonquilla “select” I had. The best formed of the progeny were Selected. These Selected forms were both backcrossed and intercrossed and so on through three more generations. One of the finest third generation Selections was named ‘Jon B. Good’ and introduced in 2010.

Now looking at the fourth generation. This is hands down, the most consistent and nicest overall formed N. jonquilla that I’ve ever seen. I have carried all of these crosses through the years with their seedling numbers really for convenience sake. I don’t see any color variance or vastly different forms in the many, many hundreds of these that I’ve flowered. They all look like pure, straight species N. jonquilla except with a much improved form. Some forms, as I believe in this clonal Selection, are vastly improved in multiple aspects.

As I (naively) did honestly keep these all under a seedling number versus calling everything N. jonquilla, the rules for naming REQUIRE that (If I am HONEST) name and register this as a clonal Selection and/or Group, Strain, or Grex, in Div. 7Y-Y and NOT as a Div. 13Y-Y species N. jonquilla. If I am bit dishonest and willing to change the records or omit the fact that I honestly did keep them all under number, I could call them species N. jonquilla.

I feel uncomfortable stretching the truth, prevaricating as an attorney might say, (OK, OK, lying like a rug) so this IS and must be by rule, a 7Y-Y which might be named someday and bears a “surprisingly” close familial resemblance to its parent, grandparents, great grandparents and so on and on.

One lesson I clearly learned from this is: That I don’t know what I don’t know. :-o How was I to imagine that if I didn’t keep track of things, it might work out better than if I did keep track of things?

  1. They are gorgeous, Steve. Will us amateurs ever ever get a chance to get some? I love that rush- like foliage and the blooms look so perfect. We are finally having a few blooms come, in spite of the snow we had last night. I will bring some to Amity, but they will probably for mainly “for good of the order.” Is it possible that I have Gold fusion in bloom now, my tags got mixed up.

    Barbara in cold Corvallis.

  2. Hi Barbara,

    Thanks for asking!

A clone from the third generation of the “process” was named ‘Jon B. Good’, 7Y-Y. It has been available since 2010. It’s on the Cherry Creek WEB site. Yes, ‘Gold Fusion’ is a Season 2 flower and could be in bloom for you.

    See you on Saturday!,

    Steve
