Bereavement Notice for New Zealand members.

Hello everyone, I am sorry to report that Bruce Hughes passed away yesterday.  Although Bruce had not been able to attend shows over recent years due to old age and infirmity, many members will remember him at previous North Island Shows where he exhibited as an Amateur and enjoyed the banter and fun of interacting with everyone.  Bruce was awarded the NDS Certificate of Recognition earlier this year for his promotion of daffodils.  Over the years Bruce has  had a big influence in encouraging his nephew Wayne in showing daffodils,  poultry and gladioli.  Our thoughts go to his family.

  1. As Denise has indicated Bruce Hughes was one of the characters of the National Daffodil Society. It was always good at the start of a show weekend to have a chat with Bruce to relax before staging. Despite his humour and self deprecation Bruce grew his flowers very well and was pretty keen to win the classes he entered.

He once said to me ‘I get up in the morning, read the back page of the paper and if my name’s not there I start to plan my day.’

Well Bruce your name has been there and planning is no longer needed. We miss you very much. My sympathy to Wayne and to the extended family.

  2. Bruce and Wayne have been great supporters of the Otaki Hort Society, probably from soon after Wayne returned from the U K in the mid – late 80,s. They would have travelled to literally hundreds of shows together,– daffodils, gladioli and birds. Always with a twinkle in his eye, Bruce was a great storyteller from the shows of yesteryear and the great flowers from wayback. He had farmed in partnership for many years with Waynes father; Wayne was like another son to him and will miss him greatly. After a long chat with Wayne, we concluded that formal glads were probably his favourite show flower; in the daffs it was yellow trumpets and the pinks. I can recall some great Kinghorn, a real favourite, and he  had the best line of Verran around; many premiers with that beautiful Tasmanian pink.

His  wife for over 60 years had passed away about 6 weeks ago and now he will be at peace with  Joyce. The Central Group were pleased with the timely award of the NDS Certificate of Recognition to Bruce. Bruce was in Otaki for the very first meeting to form the Central Daff group and always made an effort to support the regional shows. He had not been on the show circuit for about 2 seasons; we will miss him but certainly not as much as Wayne will. Our sympathy to both Wayne and his sons and daughters.
