a mystery

Friends, from the vaults of ADS I have a mystery that I seek your help in solving.  In working on “library and archival management”, there is a small book which was intended to chronicle someone’s trip to NZ in SEP 1969.  There is no name in the book, just a list of dates and where the traveler(s) visited each day, and stayed overnight.  The mystery traveler(s) departed LAX on 30 AUG 1969 and visited Tahiti on their way to NZ.  The travels in NZ included three different stays with Phil Phillips.  After crossing the International Date Line and the equator on 3 OCT 69, a few more days were spent on various Hawaiian islands.  The small book was likely given to the traveler as a “primer” on NZ, to be used as a travel journal by the tour operator/travel agency in NZ.  This was Whitcombe & Tombs, Ltd, headquartered in Christchurch.  ADS Library & Archival Policy Chair, Mary Lou Gripshover, and I, have talked and we think it best to try and get this book into the hands of  the family of the mystery traveler(s).  So if anyone out there had knowledge of who took this fabulous trek in 1969, please respond to me privately.  Graham Phillips, if you are on DaffNet, would you have any recall of a visitor(s) “from the States”…     to your Dad’s during this time frame?  Since it was 44 years ago, I realize I am truly testing everyone’s memory.  I never knew serving as ADS Executive Director would also involve detective work.  Thanks to all.

Appreciatively,

Jaydee Atkins Ager

ADS Executive Director

  1. The mystery deepens. I was there on my honeymoon and I think met Phil then but never had a guide book.

  2. Come on Harold – if you were there on honeymoon you must remember some extra curricular activities – or were you so engrossed that your mind went blank?  Gee, women can have that effect!
