Daffnetters,
Below is a lovely photo of Peter and Lesley Ramsay holding the Peter Barr Cup at an RHS awards ceremony held in London. This photograph was taken by the RHS official photographer.
The citation for this award acknowledged Peter for his many contributions to the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand, active participation at World Daffodil Conventions, as well as more than 100 raised daffodils.
Again, congratulations and well deserved!
Nancy
p.s. Great looking tie!
There is a story that goes with the tie mentioned in Nancy’s posting! It was given to Peter by Nancy and Ben and depicts Cameo Marie (named for a lovely lady, Marie Bozevich) We were in England when Nnacy and Ben received the Cup. Just before the presentation there was a knock on our bedroom door – it was a rather sheepish Ben Blake who admitted to having NOT packed a tie – he aked if he could borrow one. And so he wore the Cameo Marie tie at the presentation. I thought it only fitting that I should also wear the tie as it knew how to behave at an awards dinner!!!!
The RHS has changed the way it awards trophies. There was just about every genus represented. At our table we had the company of a Dutch breeder of allium and an Englishman who specialised in developing new strains of tomatoes for supermarket sales. . Recipients were allowed two friends – Lesley was of course one of them (she REALLY deserved to be a joint recipient), Len Olive – a great supporter of NZ raised daffodils and Malcolm Bradbury attended in his capacity of Chairperson of the former RHS Daffodil and Tulip Committee and now Chairperson of the newly formed Bulb Committee. Malcom has also given us great support over the years. We were greeted with a glass of champagne and then served an excellent three course lunch. The ceremony itself was both dignified and humourous – the MC was brilliant and the Chairperson played her part by kissing the recipients. As each award was given pictures of the recipients’ seedlings were portrayed on a big screen at the back of the stage. All in all it was an unforgettable occasion, brilliantly managed.
Thanks to all the people who have congratulated us – I was surprised to receive the Award and the long trip to England was worthwhile. We also attended and helped to judge four major shows and as always were welcomed warmly by our daffodil friends. When we get ourselves sorted out we try to post some photos of the better blooms that we saw.
Peter and Lesley
Congratulations, Peter and Lesley, on such a well-deserved honor!
Peter,
I loved the story. Is there a method where one can acquire the Cameo Marie tie? I’d like to have one.
Clay
Clay,
I am afraid Peter’s and Ben’s ties are “one of a kind” that my sister had made from a digital photograph Ben took of ‘Cameo Marie‘. This was quite some time ago (<2008) and I cannot find the exact vendor. However, a Google search displays a couple of photo tie sources. I still have the photo if you would like me to send it to you. The tie was a novel gift much appreciated by both recipients.
Nancy
Nancy,
Thanks for the information. If you can send the picture, I would truly appreciate it.
Clay
Peter & Lesley,
Congratulations on your receiving the Peter Barr Cup. You are most deserving of the recognition!
