ADS Internet Future

In our role as the ADS Internet Services Committee Co-Chairs, Nancy Tackett and I recognize that for the ADS Internet presence to survive generations, new people must be involved.  This is the same problem breeders, raisers,  and hybridizers face, that is “How to continue what we started”.

Nancy and I believe that the ADS web sites must be free and a world wide resource and also need to be supported by a diverse group of people in order to thrive.  Mary Lou Gripshover has taken ownership of the DaffLibrary and  now Kirby Fong has taken on the role of chief editor for the new DaffTube.org site.  Nancy Tackett, who maintained the main ADS site http://daffodilusa.org/ by herself for fifteen years now has a partner, Lynn Slackman for developing and maintaining the site.

Our world is becoming smaller.  For example, we did not expect Daffseek to become so popular and have so many contributions from the world community. But we quickly learned that the international daffodil community is involved and we are a part of them and because of that Daffseek received major contributions from Lachlan Keown in New Zealand and countless photographs from the United Kingdom, Italy, New Zealand and Australia. There were other teams for translation, species, and other volunteers from around the world. Not that this is a goal for all ADS web sites, it is simply an example of how more people can contribute.

Mary Lou Gripshover has been involved in DaffSeek in many ways and from the beginning.  Although she currently serves in dual roles, she is committed to DaffLibrary and to date has scanned and uploaded some 1,200 documents with hundreds more waiting in the wings. She lead the way for others to follow. Now Kirby Fong has stepped up and as the chief editor, will provide content for the new site DaffTube http://dafftube.org/.  Nancy Tackett and Lynn Slackman are both involved in designing and implementing the new prime ADS site daffodilusa.org.

On the Internet, people and web sites must change to survive. New people mean new ideas and new content. Nancy and I are very much hopeful that the involvement of new people will assure the ADS Internet presence will prosper for future generations.
