Flowering now Portstewart, N Ireland

An update from Portstewart;  The div 6 seedlings from a 1W-W miniature seedling (small talk OP x n cyc)  x ncyc.  have reached their mature flower colour.  The flowers that opened 6W-Y have faded to 6W-W.

The small talk OP originally came from Kate Reade and seems to be very fertile.  I crossed it with n cyclamineus about 5 years ago and got lots of 6Y-Y seedlings.  They are all very similar but make an impressive pot full when grown together.  They are so similar I have given up on trying to select from them.

A couple of species are also in flower; n bulbocodium graelsii grown from alpine society seed.

A seedling grex from midget x n cyclamineus is just too large for a miniature but it has inherited the blue/green foliage from midget and holds the flowers higher from the ground.  It is very floriferous and multiplies fast and makes an attractive clump when grown outside.

And finally ‘you win some and you lose some.  Four years ago I put pollen of Pink Silk onto n. cyclamineus.  The 6 seedlings have produced 4 buds this year.  The two smallest ones have turned out to be n cyclamineus.  However I am looking forward to seeing the flowers on the 2 taller ones as they are too tall to be n cyclamineus.

That’s what hybridising is all about; years of eager anticipation and only a few moments disappointment.  Lets hope the other 2 buds produce something exciting.                                              Derrick

  1. I love that quote about hybridization.  I’m in my 5th year.  Had my 1st bloom last year.  2014 is going to be great year.  I hope……

  2. Hi Derrick,

Some lovely blooms you have. The div6 seedlings are looking great. I particularly like the second white one from the left with the very fine straight corona.

  3. Lovely to see Derrick! Much like the top photo. Some really nice whites and yellows in there. Thanks so much for the photos and post.

  4. Derrick:

You can give your similar cyclamineus seedlings a group name. I have done that with several crosses that were all similar.

    Nice seedlings.
