The Northern California Daffodil Society hosted its 2023 Livermore show on March 4 and 5 at Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore. 25 exhibitors made 292 entries with a total of 802 stems. Posted here are photos of the American Daffodil Society award winners in the order in which they’re listed in the show report. If an award is not mentioned, it means there were no eligible entries or the award was not given.
The Gold Ribbon is awarded to the best standard daffodil in the show, excluding the container-grown class. The winner was ‘Bramcote Star’ 2Y-O exhibited by Steve Hampson.
The Rose Ribbon is awarded to the best standard seedling exhibited by its originator in the show, excluding the container-grown class. A seedling is an unnamed daffodil that has a seedling number assigned by its hybridizer. The winner was seedling number 23-50 3Y-YOO bred and entered by Bob Spotts.
The Miniature Gold Ribbon is awarded to the best miniature daffodil in the show, excluding the container-grown class. The Miniature Rose Ribbon is awarded to the best miniature seedling exhibited by its originator in the show, excluding the container-grown class. The winner of both ribbons as seedling 2011-040-1 4W-O exhibited by Harold Koopowitz.
The White Ribbon is awarded to the best set of three standard daffodils in the show. The winner was ‘Lemon Silk’ 6YYW-W exhibited by Kirby Fong.
The Miniature White Ribbon is awarded to the best set of three miniature daffodils in the show. the winner was seedling 2012-024-1 11aW-Y exhibited by Harold Koopowitz.
The best intermediate is selected from the Intermediates Section or from the standard collections. In this show, it was found in a collection of five intermediates. An intermediate daffodil is a standard daffodil whose diameter is typically between 50 and 80 millimeters. The best intermediate was John Reed seedling 2023-140-81 2Y/W-YPP exhibited by Steve Hampson.
The winner of the Best Intermediate 3-Stem Ribbon was ‘Harold’s Legacy’ 2W-Y exhibited by Bob Spotts.
The best bloom in the Historic Section of the show was ‘Saint Keverne’ 2Y-Y (1934) exhibited by Kirby Fong. Historic daffodils are named daffodils (not species) registered or in gardens before 1940.
The best set of three historic daffodils was this exhibit of ‘Erlicheer’ 4W-Y (1934) exhibited by Steve Hampson.
There are two ADS awards for a single classic bloom. One is for the best bloom in the Classics Section, and the other is for the best single stem exhibit in the Classics Section. The winner of both was ‘Cassata’ 11aW-W (1963) exhibited by Janet Hickman. A classic daffodil is defined to be a standard cultivar registered between 1940 and 1969 inclusive.
The best bloom in the Youth Section was ‘Avalanche’ 8W-Y exhibited by Julia Hickman. Julia is Janet Hickman’s granddaughter.
The best set of three in the Youth Section was ‘Avalanche’ 8W-Y exhibited by Julia Hickman.
The Small Growers Section is restricted to exhibitors who grow no more than 50 cultivars and/or species. The best in this section was ‘Golden Echo’ 7WWY-Y exhibited by Katherinne Hartwig.
The best standard grown and shown in a container was ‘Monal’ 2Y-R exhibited by Steve Hampson.
The best miniature grown and shown in a container was ‘Oxford Gold’ 10Y-Y exhibited by Steve Hampson.
The best species grown and shown in a container was N. fernandesii 13Y-Y exhibited by Steve Hampson.
The best collection of five historic daffodils included:

There is no ADS award called the Miniature Tuggle. There is a standard Tuggle class for three stems each of twelve different cultivars and/or species from at least three RHS divisions. There is a Miniature Bronze Ribbon for the best collection of five miniature cultivars and/or species, three stems of each, from at least three RHS divisions. What’s been added to this local show schedule is the miniature analogue of the Tuggle collection, three stems each of twelve different miniature cultivars and/or species from at least three RHS divisions.
