2024 Livermore Show – ADS Award Winners

The 2024 Livermore daffodil show was held March 6-7 at Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore. The show was smaller than usual with 318 entries and 540 stems. However there were several first time exhibitors contributing to a total of 22 exhibitors. We’ll list the ADS award winners in the same order as in the official show report but omit awards for which there were no winners.

Gold Ribbon Winner

Gold Ribbon Winner

The Gold Ribbon is awarded to the best standard daffodil in the show excluding the Container-Grown Section. The winner is ‘La Delicatesse’ 2W-W exhibited by Kirby Fong.

Rose Ribbon Winner

Rose Ribbon Winner

The Rose Ribbon is awarded to the best standard seedling exhibited by its originator in the show excluding the Container-Grown Section. A seedling is an unnamed daffodil, having only a seedling number assigned by its originator, the originator being the person who first flowered the daffodil. The winner was seedling 8-176 7G-G originated and exhibited by Bob Spotts.

Miniature Gold Ribbon Winner

Miniature Gold Ribbon Winner

The Miniature Gold Ribbon is awarded to the best miniature daffodil in the show excluding the Container-Grown Section. The winner is seedling 2003-029-1 4Y-Y exhibited by Harold Koopowitz. You can’t tell the size from the photo, but it definitely was a miniature.

Miniature Rose Ribbon Winner

The Miniature Rose Ribbon is awarded to the best miniature seedling exhibited by its originator in the show excluding the Container-Grown Section. The winner is seedling 2019-082A 7P-P exhibited by Harold Koopowitz. As you may have noticed, the Miniature Gold Ribbon winner was also a seedling originated and exhibited by its originator, so it should also have won the Miniature Rose Ribbon. However, the judges felt the pink perianth was such an innovation that it deserved to be recognized with an award.

White Ribbon Winner

The White Ribbon is awarded to the best set of three standard daffodils. The winner was ‘Cosine’ 11aW-P exhibited by Steve Hampson. It’s uncommon for a split corona to win such a high award.

Miniature White Ribbon and Historic Best Set of Three Ribbon Winner

The Miniature White Ribbon is awarded to the best set of three miniature daffodils in the show. The Historic Best Set of Three Ribbon is awarded to the best set of three miniatures in the Historic Section. In this case, the best set in the Historic Section was also the best set in the show. The cultivar is ‘Minicycla Group’ 6Y-Y (before 1912) exhibited by Janet Hickman.

Best Intermediate Ribbon Winner

Best Intermediate Ribbon Winner

The Best Intermediate Ribbon is awarded to the best intermediate daffodil in the Intermediate Section or in standard collections. The winner was ‘Runkerry’ 4W-P exhibited by Steve Hampson. An intermediate daffodil is a standard daffodil in divisions 1, 2, 3, 4, or 11 having a single floret whose diameter is typically greater than 50 mm. and up to 80 mm.

The Best Intermediate Three-Stem Ribbon is awarded to the best three-stem exhibit in the Intermediate Section. The winner was ‘Pink China’ 2W-P exhibited by Steve Hampson.

Historic Bloom Ribbon Winner

The Historic Bloom Ribbon is awarded to the best flower in the Historic Section. The winner was ‘Sweetness’ 7Y-Y (1939) exhibited by Kirby Fong. An historic daffodil is a cultivar (not a species) introduced or in gardens before 1940.

Best Classic Ribbon and Best Classic Single-Stem Ribbon Winner

Best Classic Ribbon and Best Classic Single-Stem Ribbon Winner

A classic daffodil is a standard cultivar introduced from 1940 to 1969 inclusive. There is an ADS award for the best bloom in the Classic Section and an award  for the best single-stem exhibit in the Classic Section. Both awards went to ‘Arctic Gold’ 1Y-Y (1951) exhibited by Steve Hampson.

The Small Growers Section is restricted to exhibitors who grow 50 or fewer different cultivars or species. The best bloom in this section was ‘Fencourt Jewel’ 8W-P exhibited by Marty Lux.

The Purple Ribbon is awarded to the best collection of 5 standard daffodils, and the Intermediate Collection of Five Ribbon is awarded to the best collection of 5 intermediate daffodils. This entry won both awards. The flowers are:

While the flowers clearly have green, the labels obviously have some mistakes, but we report what was written on the labels. The exhibitor was Bob Spotts.

One final ADS award that goes to an exhibitor rather than to an exhibit is the Silver Ribbon for the most blue (first place) ribbons won in the Horticulture Division (excluding the section for unidentified daffodils). The Silver Ribbon winner was Bob Spotts with 37 blue ribbons.
