Strange Bulb Configuration

Hi,

I was sent the picture  and the message below from a friend, Bob Issak, who shows up to some of the Daffodil Shows and helps out but may not be a Daffodil Society member but has High standing in the world of horticulture. He and I have swapped bulbs in the past.  It seems like the top bulbs came out of the lower bulbs stems.  I’ve never run across this before and was wondering if anyone else had.  I would like to have your opinion about the bulbs.

“Before the days become unbearably hot, I dig a few old beds and just came across the bulbs seen at attachment.  I think it is a Tete-a-Tete that was in a small bed that I had enclosed with wire mesh to protect other vole eating bulbs.  Didn’t know new bulbs could form from impeded leaf growth if indeed that  is the case.  Any ideas?”

  1. You see this type of bulb formation, all the time in larger clumps of lycoris. Or bulbs of lycoris that have been planted deeper than they want to grow in that soil type. Keith Kridler Mt. Pleasant, Texas

  2. Keith,

    After further contact with Bob Isaak, this bed was a mixed bed of bulbs and he does have lycoris in the bed.  He thinks this may have been a lycoris bulb instead of a daffodil. If so, you have provided an answer.  Thank you!

    Anyone else have an opinion?
