As many daffodil people know, a strain of rice was genetically modified with two genes from daffodils so that the rice is able to manufacture carotein, an essential nutrient that is missing from white rice. Golden rice helps prevent blindness, but with all the brouhaha about “Frankenfoods” , information about golden rice seemed to have disappeared. Here is an update from the BBC.

Hello Harold,
Many thanks for your update. I immediately included this additional information in the Daffodil page of my on-line guide to geophytes for Italian gardeners (http://www.floriana.ws/FACILE/SENTIERO_VERDE/A/A_T_tabella_Narcissus.htm).
Thanks again, Henry
I have read in the recent literature they are working on modifications of Wheat next
Golden Rice accumulates provitamin A (β-carotene) in the grain

It’s actually beta carotene, well known from carrots etc. This link gives some more detail.
Why not wheat, as well? I think it is a good way to adequately feed the world. I know some think it is “frankenfood”, but we can’t go on as we are. How about the artificial hamburger? I’ve eaten soyburgers and I’ll bet they taste similar. We have to start thinking outside the box.
