More Birds

Just one more photo. Red Bellied Woodpeckers are pretty common here, BUT not many have flown my way until about 6 years ago. Now I see them pretty often.

  1. I’m just in the next county east of Tom Stettner (SW Ohio), and I see the red-bellied woodpeckers pretty much every day. The pilleated is also a frequent visitor during the day. The downy and hairy also visit. I buy blocks of suet at the grocery store and cut it into pieces that fit the suet cage attached to the tree outside my living room window. The starlings are also attracted to this feeder, so in the bad winter months (like now) I may have to replenish the suet at least once during the day.  We also used to get the red-headed woodpecker, a handsome creature, but haven’t seen him in 3-4 years.

  2. My red-headed also disappeared while the red-bellieds increased in number.  An article I read in a wildlife magazine states that is because the red-bellieds are so aggressive that they took over the niche created by the red-headeds.  Whatever the reason, I am thrilled to see one red-headed woodpecker at my feeder.
