and finally–out in the open in Ohio

Finally there are a few blooms out in the open ground.  One is a 1 Y-Y seedling of mine from a Helen Link seedling, and the other is Helen’s seedling.  And the third is of cyclamineus grown from seed.

  1. Congratulations, Mary Lou, on being able to bloom a cyclamineus from seed! I could not tell from your photo, but some of us grow a Link ‘Wee Bee’ x cyclamineus seedling that Joe Hamm registered as ‘Star Baby’ because of the conservatory on Helen’s property.  Several buds of it are about to bloom here. Thank you again for the helleborus seedlings.  A couple of clumps have the white petals with the pink dappling in the throat.  I’m looking forward to blooms from the others the next year. The ground thawed a little here in early February.  Then the snow came and came and came.  The 23 inches (second highest ever) provided a wonderful blanket and protected the daffodils from the low temperatures. Yesterday afternoon two almost too big mini seedlings (with about 1/3 overlapping petals) popped into bloom.  A newly planted unusually tiny ‘Gypsy Queen’ also opened.  A half dozen ‘Small Talk’ also opened, two were nice, and the others decreased in form down to the one with no petals.  What I think is ‘Suviva’ has a couple of buds. A few of its leaves are also peeping out from under a stepping stone.  ‘Lemon Silk’ is opening.  The standard seedlings on the south side of the house are two or three weeks ahead of last year’s. The 2005 seedlings have 24 buds so far, most small.  Only four bloomed last year.  Not many of the 2004 seedlings bloomed last year, but most have buds this year.  I’m eagerly looking forward to all the “maiden” blooms.  The larger ones will be looking for friendly rock gardens. Not open in the greenhouse when I left for Murphys are 10 ‘Yellow Xit’ blooms, 2 assoanus, and a bulbocodium graelsii.  More lettuce is up, and a yellow rose is blooming Leone Low
