Escholtzia californica

In bloom on my walk yesterday: Escholtzia californica, the California poppy, than which there is probably no more vivid shade of orange, which is from its Rutin content: http://www.jbc.org/content/41/4/495.full.pdf  "The petals of Escholtzia californica contain nearly 5 per cent of rutin (quercetin glucose-rhamnoside). "

  1. One person’s flower is another person’s weed. I spend a lot of time yanking these out of the garden.

  2. Ah Melissa, my (smarter than I will ever be) friend, I can’t wait to be able to work quercetin glucose-rhamnoside into my conversation.
Did you really mean that 5% of the substance of the petal is rutin?  Wow!  Does it occur in daffodil petals?  or is that carotene?

  3. Donna:
The article says it is 5% in the petals, and that seems to be dry weight.
"7.13 gm. of rutin (dried at 140╟C.) were obtained from 150 gm. of air-dried petals." (on p 496 of the article.)
It’s pretty astounding, isn’t it? No wonder they’re so brilliantly orange, and their very own distinctive shade.

Now, what I want to know, is whether this is a good edible source of Rutin, which, when sourced from citrus, is an important part of the bioflavonoid complex that should be consumed with Vitamin C. But it’s illegal to pick California Poppies in this state, so I guess I can’t just snack on them trailside….(as I do mustard)….
