red or orange

When I buy a W-R, I look at the breeding, and if it’s bred from pink daffodils, I expect it will be pink-red here.  Otherwise I’d expect it to be orange-red.

The RHS Registration Form gives these guidelines for using their Colour Chart:

In distinguishing < ?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Orange from Red in daffodil classification, borderline colours including and on the yellow side of RHS Orange Group 29 are said to be Orange; colours including and on the purple side of Orange-Red Group 30 are Red

I don’t know how many hybridizers use the color chart when color coding their daffodils.  And obviously your location would have a lot to do with how you code  your flowers.  Color is different in Oregon or Northern Ireland than it is here–unless we’re having perfect daffodil spring weather.

  1. I code my flowers using the same codes reported on the RHS registration form.  Less than 30 is orange; 30 and above is red.  Bloodlines don’t enter into it.
