Earthquake

The news is now coming in that the earthquake was not limited to the central city and that many of the Suburbs have been affected.  David and Leitha live close to the Airport which is operating for emergency flights only, but is operable,  so here’s hoping that they were at home and are OK.  I am sure that David will put a message on daffnet as soon as he is able.

  1. Hello All Again,

This is shaping up to be NZ’s worst natural disaster.  The death toll is continuing to rise and the collapse of major inner city buildings continues added to by some fires.  The quake was centred near the Port of ChCh – a small town called Lyttleton.  No news on it yet as the tunnel which connects it to ChCh is closed (possibly collapsed) .  There is some news that the township is almost totally destroyed.  While the death toll is 65 there is no question that this will rise substantially.

Still no news on our ChCh friends apart from Malcolm and Rozanne who live to the South of ChCh and who are safe and sound.  Our Uni colleagues and friends were on their way North and we were down to have dinner with them Thursday night. They were driving here and have probably turned back.

    All pretty distressing.

  2. My prayers are certainly with your countrymen.

This is the U.S. government earthquake site that I monitor (just an interest of mine) each day.  Just refresh it to get up to the minute data.  I have been noticing all the earthquakes along the Eastern side of the Pacific and especially in New Guinea where there have been quite a few large ones.

I hope they are able to get relief supplies into the country.
