  1. Hello Mike and All,

Very nice photo.  Great to see Creag Dubh featuring.  This was the variety that John Lea called “The Beast’ as it required a lot of dressing to get on the show bench.  When I was helping him stage his entries at the RHS Show many years ago he handed me a flower of CD and said “I need one more red cup for my Engleheart entry – can you do anything with this one?” . As many of our older members will know John had lost fingers in an accident and dressing flowers was difficult for him.   The bloom was unlike John’s other smoothies, but the colour was brilliant, so a lot of finger and thumb work and  brush work was needed, and more time was allocated to it than I would ever have had  back home in NZ.  However it did get to the point where John and Betty decided to put it into their entry.  I was, of course, thrilled to have played a small part in his entry, which won the coveted trophy.!

Later I purchased a bulb of it and it has been in the parentage of several of my named varieties.  It now grows strongly in the border of one of our gardens.

Thanks again Mike, you brought back some very pleasant memories.

Paddock all ploughed up here, fertilizer applied and planting will start soon.

    Peter

  2. Beautiful blooms Michael; thanks for sharing and congrats to the winners.
