Murphys 2011

Friends:
We were thankful at our NCDS show at Murphys this weekend for the fact that last year’s weather had been so welcoming to the Murphys 2010 ADS convention. When we arrived this last Friday, the swaths of daffodils along the roads were as beautiful as I’ve ever seen them. However, in late afternoon snow began to fall, and shortly after 8pm, there was a power blackout over the entire area owing to heavy snow on the trees. That was the end of staging. In the morning, though we arrived at 6am to re-commence staging, the security person who was to have opened the room was himself snowed in at his home. He arrived at 7:30. The rest of the day continued chaotic.
This morning began with heavy rain around 6am, which had turned to falling slush by 7:30, and to beautiful large soft flakes of snow by 8:15. It accumulated beautifully on trees and shrubs and made driving trecherous. So it was a very different experience than last year’s sunny days. The creek through town has flooded, inundating the streamside picnic benches along its margins, and this morning was nearly as high as the bridge. Every meadow is now a lake, and every rivulet a torrent.

  1. Hi Melissa,
A little farther North here in Lassen County, we have had similar weather and power problems. I can look out an upstairs window and see that the river is flooding the fields. For 20+ years my daffs have chosen March 17th as their target day to start blooming. However, I have no idea when they will bloom this year! A bit of green in one bed and a few green tips showing in other less protected beds. The latest the first bloom has ever been is less than a week after the 17th, but with snow forecasted for all week, bloom date will most likely set a record for lateness.
