First Flower of Season

Hello All,

The first flower has appeared in our showbeds !0:1 Cameo Frost x Cameo Lady.  10:1 means the first flower selected in 2010 from previously unflowered seedlings. We have very ararely named selections carrying low numbers –  to use a cricketing term it takes us some time to get our eye in focus!  Much better flowers appear later!  This one already has Out written on the label!  Still it’s nice to have something so early in the piece.

Cheers,

Peter and Lesley

  1. Hello Peter,
I am interested in your comment that you rarely name low numbered seedlings. I am convinced that show quality flowers need both water and warmth. My best flowers always appear when the soil warms up in early October. It could well be that those rejected seedlings would be fine if flowering in warmer soil. I have always felt that the superior quality flowers exhibited from the Waikato are a result, not only of superior rainfall and feeding but also of warmer soil temperature.
We had our best show season last year. Instead of putting cut flowers in the cooler I kept them in the warm lounge. The development after picking was amazing.
    Dave
