Flowers to London

Hi Clay,

Christchurch to Auckland 1hr 20 mins
Auckland to LAX 13hrs 30mins
LAX to London 12hrs 30mins plus stop overs so it l;ooks like the flowers would be out of water for about 36 hours.

Mary Lou, that photo was last published about 1982. Wow. It looks like City Lights is the flower on top of the box.

  1. Hi Dave,

The photo was from the Bell 1972-1973 catalog. A long time ago! Two pages in the catalog reported on the show and the reaction in the British press. “The R.H.S. Daffodil Committee were all there to examine the blooms and five of them (City Lights, Overcall, Caprice, Stanford, and Highfire) were given Certificates of Preliminary Commendations by them. Also the Lindley Medal was awarded for the exhibit.”

  2. David,

Thank you David.  I thought it would be about a day and a half.

I’m doing this from memory.  My first trip to an American Daffodil Society National Show was in Baltimore, MD.  I think it was in 1996.  Prior to the National show Bob Spotts brought a dry pack from California to Washington DC Show, of his seedlings and won the collection of 24 (Quinn Award) with his seedlings.  The National show in Baltimore is  I first met Brian Duncan, John Pearson and Ron Scamp.  John and Ron were telling me, and I was amazed, at their exhibits coming dry packed from the British Isles. We had brought Marie Bozievich to the show with us, and she told me that is how she took daffodils to England herself.  I got involved with the dry pack for the Equinox from New Zealand, and later took dry packed daffodils to Portland, OR back in 2000 for the first time.  I still find it amazing how they come back.  I guess I’m into nostalgia these days.

This past March   for the ADS Judging School I, Carolyn Hawkins and I revived a “too” old Pink Silk 1W-P in the same manner as dry pack and it was beautiful enough to use in the student daffodils identification section of the Judging School.
