All,
Was talking with someone responsible for a historic landscape, and the city parks people are using XL 2G preemergent, with 1.0% benefin and 1% oryazlin (surflan) as the two listed active ingredient.
(1 pound active ingredient per 50 lb bag)
She wants to know if this will damage any bulb, not just Narcissus, such as hyacinth, tulip, ipheion, hyacinthoides, lycoris, lily, etc etc etc
Apparently the City just spread two fat bags of this stuff…
Any insight regarding any bulb MUCH appreciated…

I lost several hundred four-year-old seedlings when heavy rain
exposed their necks just after replanting and unnoticed, they were
sprayed with surflan.

Bob, Sara,
A number of years ago, when I was in charge of Whetstone Park Daffodil Garden,
we were approached by a professor from Ohio State Univ to assist them in doing
an experiment on pre-emergent herbicides. The next spring, it was determined
that Surflan was the most efficient herbicide and recommended it for bulbs.
However, the daffodils were planted at the proper depth and the preemergent was
sprayed on top of the ground. They subsequently published their findings in a
University publication. I would think that spraying it on the neck of small
bulbs would not be a good thing. The researchers felt that it would not
adversely affect bulbs of any kind, not just narcissus.
