Miniature White – In Bloom Today

This is V05-01-4 which is a cross of: {(Xana x Candlepower) x (Candlepower x Sprite)}. The flower diameter is 25mm (right at 1″). The overall height is 67mm (2 5/8″ tall). 20 seed sown. 14 germinated and 11 were raised to flowering. Nine of the seedlings look like (Xana x Candlepower) x SELF with no touch at all of the taller, wider ‘Sprite’. Two do show height of 8″ ala ‘Sprite’. I suppose it is much too small a sample to really obtain any meaningful data.

Speaking now from a hybridizers perspective, what a crummy perianth! I swear to you that both seedling parents were of far better form than is expressed in this “child”. Note the six segments. They have the dubious (ssp. dubius????; sorry, I couldn’t pass it up) distinction of having five different shapes and four different lengths. The six o’clock petal is 2mm longer than all the others. Major faults, in my estimation, which speak heavily against the potential of this flower.

If this flower were to be blown up to the size of a standard daffodil, it honestly wouldn’t merit a second look.

To me, it seems far more difficult to obtain results that approach the desired goal(s) when breeding Miniature Daffodils. One has to sift through huge numbers of ” bits of hay from the haystack” in order to find that single, tiny little needle.
