summer colours.

Hi Daffnetters,
As the winter is finally arriving in the North, we are
still waiting for some
warm, settled summer weather. We are having well above
average summer rainfall,
with a lot of overcast, cloudy days.
The summer flowers were late starting but, once
established, the dahlias and gladioli
have thrived on the extra rainfall.
Prominent daff shower and breeder Wayne Hughes is a great
supporter of the local
Otaki Summer Show.

Wayne had Champion bloom with one of his very successful
registrations, a
formal blue named Tayforth Gem – very consistent form and
colour.
He also staged six Tayforth Gem seedlings — all from the same
cross, to
show the colour range and different forms he is getting as he
chases better,
bigger and bluer champions.

We are enjoying and appreciating the northern flowers as they
are beginning to
appear; over lunch about 6 daff exhibitors and breeders all
appreciated how
lucky we are that our winters are not as severe as many of
you are currently
enduring.
Harold and Steve, you are producing some amazing miniatures
, thanks for
sharing them.

Cheers John.

  1. John,

The beautiful glads on display bring back memories from my childhood of attending gladiola shows in Kentucky.  My father supplied glads in the summer to local florists.  In fact, some of my first year college expenses were paid for by glad money my father gave me for making the deliveries to local florists.  Thank you for rekindling the memories.
