Miniature 2Y-O

This is a cross of the late Ben Hager’s truly wonderful small Intermediate, ‘Cayenne’ x N. rupicola. This particular flower is 43 mm in diameter with a corona just over 1/3 the perianth length which makes it a Div. 2. Some of the later siblings measure Div. 3. The color code is 2Y-O. Height is about 7″ tall. The cross was made using frozen N. rupicola pollen.

I’ve used ‘Cayenne’ extensively for both Miniatures and Intermediates and it is really giving some super things.

  1. Hi Vincent,

Nice to hear from you and thanks for your inquiry!

Glad you like ‘Cayenne’. It has been a truly great performing Intermediate here as well as being highly fertile. One of the much missed Ben Hager’s outstanding flowers.

I did not get any seed set last year on any of the V06-82 progeny. I did use every one that flowered last year (8 or 9) but will have more to try over the next few weeks. The pollen may have some slight fertility. It’s way too soon to tell exactly what I’ll get. Got NO seed backcrossing them to ‘Cayenne’ itself which is a great pity as that’s where I’d expect to intensify the color. I did get four whole seeds (whoop dee doo; said with disappointment and sarcasm) when put back on to one of my carefully Selected clones which I used as the original pollen parent that came from Walter Blom’s ‘Pygmy Group N. rupicola’. If I had to guess, I’d bet that the color will disappear backcrossing to the N. rupicola parent but it has some chance of restoring fertility. Only time will tell.

Re: Cherry Creek WEB site for 2012 – Will be “up” and running by Sunday night. Working on the final proofing and error correction now. When that’s done, it will go “up”. Have added a new shopping cart feature which has seemed to me as much fun as having an extended, six week long, dental “root canal”. I’ll post an announcement to my customer list as well as out on DaffNet.

Again, thanks for the e-mail. Hope you continue to have a fine 2012 season.

    With Kindest Regards,

    Steve
