Loyce and Harold

A few years ago, one of the show reports from the UK noted that ‘Kokopelli’ was NAS, and went on
to explain that the judges made their decision based on the fact that while every bloom was clearly
a miniature, the stem was so floriferous that the visual impact was too large for the miniature classes. Does this relate at all to this discussion?

I am sure it does Loyce although I think NAS is a bit tough. We would downpoint a stem rather than NAS it. I think that, as long as the florets measure, if it is miniature in growth and appearance then it is a miniature. Erlicheer and Grande Monarque clearly do not look like miniatures.

  1. In the UK Kokopelli grows tall with a good head of flowers and a strong and sturdy stem. The RHS have used it as part of the mass planting of Spring bulbs at the Wisley garden.

When staged as a miniature, not only are the collective florets really too large to be considered a diminutive and dainty miniature exhibit but the stem can be shown much too tall. If cut down to a more miniature size the stem is then too sturdy in comparison with other miniature exhibits. The balance is really all wrong.

The Daffodil Society does not include it on the Miniature list. However it is still a lovely flower and is often a winner if shown as a Division 7 either singly, in a set of three or as part of a Div 5,6 and 7 collection.
