Announcing New Daffnet

Daffnet_ User_Guide_Welcome.pdf

Dear Daffnet mailing-list members,

After a long wait, our new Daffnet.org web forum is now ready for everyone to use! In the June issue of the ADS Journal (Page 264), we explained why this new forum is important and we provided introductory member information.

The American Daffodil Society has a long standing history of maximizing the use of the Internet for the purpose of researching, educating and promoting daffodils. A natural step was to move the long-time email discussion list to a web-based forum which can be found at https://daffnet.org.

Attached is the first chapter of our User Guide with photos of many Daffnet.org screens and it will tell you about the many things you can do without logging into Daffnet. You can follow discussions about current topics or search for topics of interests in our archives going back to 2003. You can support the ADS and Daffnet simply by visiting and viewing the Daffnet forum which improves our ranking on the Internet. If you are a researcher, you might find the Section about searching through Daffnet of interest. This chapter will also tell you how to register to become a member of Daffnet or how to get a newpassword if you already have a membership account.

Currently we have four chapters of our User Guide, from beginning to advanced, but we want you to realize that you do not have to go beyond your goals of how to contribute to Daffnet.

The second chapter, which we will send later this week, will tell you how to contribute messages (or Posts) to Daffnet or how to reply or comment on someone’s message. We believe the new forum is really easy to use. If you just want to read the Daffnet discussions like you did on the mailing list, you can do that. If you want to comment on messages, but you do not want to start new topics you can do that by commenting or replying to a specific message.

Beginning Monday, September 3rd, instead of sending an email, we ask Daffnet members to post their messages on the Daffnet.org forum. If you wish to comment on someones entry, there is a reply or comment box for you to write your reply. You must be a logged into Daffnet.org to make a comment or write a new message.

For about a month, you will receive email telling you about new messages and comments that are available to read on Daffnet.org.  After that, the mailing list version of Daffnet will be phased out. Mailing lists are difficult to manage and do not accommodate the computer and mobile devices available today. The new Daffnet forum is designed to auto-size displays and photos to work with a desktop computer or Android and Apple tablet, even some cell phones.

We appreciate everyone’s help in making this transition to a web forum. Like we stated in our ADS June Journal article, Daffnet has many very good discussions that can now be shared with the everyone on the Internet. Remember, if you need help, you can always send Nancy or I an email.
