‘Verdant Sparks’

When I registered this I did it as a 7 G-G. The parentage is N. jonquilla by N. viridiflorus. It is quite a small flower (25 mm); the tepals are somewhat wider than those of N. viridiflorus and the color green is quite different. I now wonder if it should not have been classified as an 11a G-G? The cup is split to the base.  Note the cup parts are not symmetrically arranged. The corona is so small one does not notice this unless the floret is blown up in a photo. Fragrance follows that of N. viridiflorus. People seem to like this one. It is a good grower and flowers freely and is long lasting. Makes up to 4 florets to the stem and clumps readily. Usually flowers in December in Southern California.

  1. Harold,

I guess by definition this cultivar is Div 11 but surely all the other predominant characteristics are clearly evidence of N jonquilla, so 7G-G it should surely be.

  2. Hi Dave,

Harold Cross’ ‘Debate’ is so named because it is arguably 11b. There are many flowers that split but not so that you’d notice on casual inspection. So I figure a flower should only be registered a split if the split is a strong element in the appearance of the flower. For me, this passes as an 11.

  3. Hello Harold,

Add me to the list of people who like this. A delightful little flower. Like Dave, while it could be classified as an eleven, I think the appearance of this flower shows much more of the jonquilla characteristics. If the corona was flattened out and showed definite splits, yes an eleven would be in order. In the picture, the splits are not apparent. It looks like just a very nice scalloped corona. So in my opinion, you made the right choice the first time. Thanks for giving us another wonderful green daffodil.

    Regards,

    Larry
