Teratology

One of the great things about hybridizing is that one never knows what to expect, or if one knows what one should expect then nature throws a curve ball. Teratology is the study of monsters. Not sure if this guy will look the same next year but if it is stable then perhaps the name ‘Trillium’ suggests itself :-).  Perhaps it belongs in Division 15? This comes from a batch of seed of ‘Emerald Sea’ open pollinated. You could not ask for a deeper green cup.

  1. Perhaps It’s a DAFFOTRIL from Narcissus x Trillium. That would be some intergeneric hybrid!!!!

Could it be done by genetic engineering? I hope your ‘Monostrosity is stable Harold, it’s an interesting oddity but I find most of these things either revert to normal or do not survive.

Of course, Best of all would be if it comes back with 6 perfect petals and that lovely green cup.

  2. I have had a flower with one petal enveloping a corona sealing it off from the world.  I get a fair number of these when the frost penetrates rapidly in the Fall.  By the way, trillium in the wild seem to have this happen as well.  I have seen several of  one and two petaled flowers from time to time.  I again attribute this to freeze damage.  any thoughts?
