a happy tazetta

Friends, this is an image, taken from above, of a clump of a white tazetta that Mary Lou Griphsover collected in Portugal in 2005. It blooms for me sporadically throughout our mostly mild middle GA winters, but toward the end of JAN, it puts on its full display. Mary Lou had it growing in a pot at her home near Cincinnati OH, but it wasn’t very happy. She wanted to give this little jewel a good home, so she sent it south with me. I was overnighting at MLG’s residence in mid summer 2006, because I was traveling to Columbus OH to pick up all the ADS office contents from Naomi Liggett, my predecessor. So the pot of this tazetta, came along with all the other things, in a medium sized rental moving truck. I really enjoy this tazetta for many reasons, and wanted to share it with you.  Sorry for the underlining.  This is the first time I have attempted to post an image on DaffNet, and I see I have much to learn.

  1. That’s cool!  Admittedly, I get a little confused by all the tazetta subspecies, and I need to grow more of them.  I’m assuming this is an example of N. tazetta ssp. tazetta. I just love how the RHS states, “Extremely variable and many variants have been named; as with N. pseudonarcissus the situation is confused by horticulturalist selection and naturalization.”

  2. Or maybe it’s a form of N. papyraceus.  I’m glad it found a happy home in Georgia. :-)

  3. My wife Teri and I just got back from a trip to Southern Spain and was on the lookout for some wild daffodils.  The only ones we found where some sort of white tezetta with up to 10 flowers per stem.  We found them on the path to a Cave called Pileta Cave.  The cave tour is highly recommended.  Cave drawing over 32.000 years ago.  We were there Jan 21st and some of the flowers were past their prime.  I’ll post photos as soon I figure out how to post.  The posting instructions for photos are not totally clear.  The icon mentioned is not visible on my computer.  (At least I can not find it).  May be the same at the
