Canaliculatus and Snipe

Further to the discussion on Canaliculatus Neil took this photo in the patch today.  I also have the one I call the non-flowerer although it does have the odd stem.  When I put them side by side I can’t tell the difference, except the prolific flowerer has more flowers to the stem, often 8.

Canaliculatus

Snipe opened very yellow because of the cold weather and frosts – it is taking its time whitening, In the meantime the bumblebees are having a field day, at least 50% of the flowers have holes gnawed in them such as those in the  photo.

  1. The stock of Canaliculatus that I posted a photo of the other day came from Denise. Maybe there are flowering and non flowering clones.

  2. What an amazing patch of Snipe. It has to be one of the loveliest miniature daffodils available.

  3. Denise,

Your patch of Canaliculatus and Snipe are stunning, it proves that these beautiful culivars can be grown in the open ground. I have grown Snipe in pots for 40 years, but, after seeing your display, I can’t wait to transfer them to the ground.

I have also grown Canaliculatus in pots and the open ground, the latter being more successful, however, my Canaliculatus, varies in colour from yours, mine, has a  more golden yellow corona, and pointed perianth.

Odoratus, another cultivar is similar to Canaliculatus, which has a paler corona, for me it flowers more freely, do you grow this variety?

  4. Nancy,

I am well aware that Snipe is listed as a miniature. My question remains for discussion. Does Snipe actually fit the measurement requirements for a miniature? The question being somewhat rhetorical.

  5. David,

I forgot to mention that ‘Snipe’ is one of the miniatures that Ben and I grow. Granted we do not have the best conditions and it grows small for us. Even so, it seems hardy and keeps coming back every spring!

On another note, we receive annual updates from all the national societies to update their Intermediates and Miniatures lists on DaffSeek.  Daffodils are removed as well as added to these lists each year.  I interpret this add/remove activity to mean there must be a continual evaluation process.

  6. Hi David,

I can see where you are coming from. It shows the stupidity in not including all divisions as intermediates doesn’t it. Perhaps the time is coming where this should be revisited again.
