Vallejo Daffodil Project

Last Sunday, I enjoyed being with the Vallejo Daffodil Project. This is a volunteer group who buy and plant daffodil bulbs around their city. Like every group, there is a person who everyone rallies around. This group has a very special lady named Carmen Johnson, who single handily can charm anyone! She is surrounded by a group of relentless daffodil lovers. Below is first a photo  of Carmen, and the next a photo of some very talented and hard working daffodil promoters, from left to right Marie Neri, Carmen Johnson, Marilyn Giuffre, Marsha Medford and myself (guest volunteer).

Normally, you learn something new when you are with other groups, and this day was no exception. The Vallejo Daffodil Project folks made huge daffodils and used these earlier for the city’s July 4th parade. Last Sunday, they attached the large daffodils to their tent. The petals are a type of foam board covered with yellow paper and cut into the shape of six petals. They then placed an orange plastic sand pail (small child’s bucket) in the middle of an orange paper plate.  The petals, paper plate and sand pail were all held together with a plastic tie which was wrapped around the handle of a green plastic baseball bat.  At the risk of naming a vendor, all the supplies except the foam board, were purchased at the Dollar Store.  Below are three photos, one front view, one side view, and one inside the cup of a huge daffodil.

These were absolutely darling and an ingenious idea!

The Vallejo Daffodil Project is a group of very imaginative and talented people. They sold lemonade and bottled water to make money to buy more bulbs to plant this fall.  The lemonade was genius as the yellow drink matched the booth perfectly and they almost sold out.  I look forward to returning to Vallejo  next spring to see their many beautiful daffodil blooms!

  1. The ingenuity and energy of this group are simply amazing! Look at the cleverness of their huge daffodils! Both yellow and white petals, and different shades of color among cups.  And complete with green stems!

Carmen is much the master organizer and leader – their “sparkplug”. Last February at the Filoli Gardens Spring weekend opening,  Marie and Marilyn spread their infectious enthusiasm for daffodils to visitors as hosts at our Northern California Daffodil Society’s educational table and display.

What effective promoters of our flower they are!

  2. Lovely!    It is amazing what you can do for little money if you use your imagination!  Thanks for sharing!!!
