  1. What a lovely selection Theo. I have a number of very nice Triple Crown x N. assoanus seedlings but the stems are annoyingly long for the size of the flowers. I think the plant should be proportionate to the size of the flower.

I missed your Sidley x N. assoanus picture – is it shorter and what colour the perianth?

  2. Brian,

To answer your question I went with a ruler to  my large daffodil field and measured the following data:

    Triple Crown x N. assoanus (4 seedlings): Stem length 32 – 43 cm, flower diameter 40 – 55 mm

    Ken’s Favorite x N. assoanus ( 3 seedlings): Stem length 27 – 39 cm, flower diameter 50 – 60 mm

TS 108 x N. assoanus (1 seedling): Stem length 34 cm, flower diameter 50 mm

    Sidley x N. assoanus (7 seedlings): Stem length 15 – 36 cm, flower diameter 35 – 55 mm

    Foundling x N. assoanus (2 seedlings): Stem length 26 – 34 cm

The seedling ‘Sidley x N. assoanus’ of my contribution from April 21/2020 is pure white with a stem length of 26 cm and a flower diameter of 45 mm.

It is quite clear, that seedlings of  little standard daffodils like for example Sidley, Foundling and Bantam crossed with N. assoanus  can have flowers with a short stem. Some seedlings of Bantam I lost and the seedlings of Foundling seem to be not very vigorous.

  3. Theo,

Many thanks. I think we need to use short forms of N. assoanus as well as the short stemmed Intermediate daffodils if we are to get the plants into appropriate proportion

to the size of the flowers. I have been using N. rupicola with this in mind. Also, it would be nice to find a short stemmed N. poeticus – which seems to have a dominant ‘lomg-stem’ gene

    whatever it is crossed with.

I’m surprised your ‘Foundling’ seedlings are not vigorous – must be the N. assoanus influence.
