The Central Daffodil Group openned the spring season 2023 with a small , early show in the Levin on Tuesday 1 August ..We were back amongst the books in the Te Takere Library and Community Centre .
We were a week earlier than last year for our first show but numbers were similar with 7 exhibitors staging 32 vase 3 and 52 singles for a total 148 stems .Notice the wording , – probably a third of the stems were tazettas – the flower count would be very high .
And the fragrance was very noticeable , – to the delight of the public .We finished staging by 11 am and panel judging had them all sorted in 30 minutes , – just as the public numbers were increasing steadily .We had a staging room just out of the main hall , – and a seperate meeting room where we held out A G M after a catered lunch and coffee .Very useful to have all our needs catered for in one big , spaceous venue . We had held a much bigger late show here several years back and they were very keen to host us again .
Public interest was strong as they struggled with the variety of types – divisions – most did not have in their gardens this early in the season , – still winter – not quite spring yet with snow on the local Tararua Ranges
Wayne Hughes , down from Whanganui with quite a few well groomed and stage flowers, had a very successful day with some fine flowers and we were all pleased to see flowers from our recently passed close friend Wilfred Hall , well rewarded .At the early end of the season we were all greatful for his superb tazettas.

Congrats, Wayne! What a perfect tazetta! I love the double, too.
Thanks for the show report and the photos John, congratulations to Wayne on his lovely Avalex. The venue looks excellent, daffodils and books seem to go together somehow!
