Golden Rice and Daffodils–but don’t eat them!


In a message dated 8/8/2010 6:28:48 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, writes:

Vitamin A and Alzheimers medicine . . .and we thought they were just pretty yellow flowers.

This should not be taken as a recommendation to add daffodils to your diet. The tissues of the daffodil plant are somewhat toxic.

For all these years, the toxicity of daffodils has been preventing us from getting at all that wonderful beta carotene they contain.  Looks like the plant toxins have been doing their job to prevent human and animal herbivory of daffodils.  It has taken modern science to figure out a way to get at them.
