Laser printer plant labels

Hey Bill do you have the type of Avery address labels that you all use for sticking on your daffodil markers? Also do any/all of the laser printers ink last the same? I need about one summers lifetime for the plant labels. Thanks
Keith Kridler

PS I was going to just send this to Bill but thought there might be other ideas for quickie plant labels. I need something that will last for a summer or one growing season. I recall some of you all using a clear Avery return address type label. We are going to put them on white plastic, waffle board type political sign boards. We change out plants in some beds every year. It would be nice not to have to hand label each plant marker each year with Sharpie pens….

  1. Keith, I have used the transparent Avery labels–these are address label size. You can get a few years out of them. Of course this varies with sun exposure and other weather situations. Bill Lee —-

  2. Keith,

I use Avery # 15513 (2″ x 4″ actual size) They come 10 labels per page – 10 sheets per pack. They last at least 4 years or more (unless you hit them with the weed whip or mower). I paste them on 3/4 ” white PVC – approx 11″ tall (I get 11 from a 10′ length) This allows me to push them in 6″ and still get an inch of freeboard for reading.(Or, as is often the case, the ability to pull them out – read them, and put them back securely)

  3. a suggestion on labels to last you can use a hole puncher on plastic or metal and use different numbers or designs in the label punched the sun will never fad the holes punched then make a key on paper with index of names and the number system you use or design system you use they will last a long long time no more fading of markers on labels

  4. Keith,

    Wrong Bill…

    But I use Avery 5520 Waterproof Mailing Labels, 1″ x 25/8″,
they are 30 per sheet, 50 sheets to a box.

  5. Another choice for anyone looking for longer label lifetime in the garden--Riteintherain.com sells Waterproof Vinyl Labels 2 5/8" x 1-1/8", 24 labels per sheet in packs of 100 sheets.  I first bought one of their small pocket waterproof paper notepads for my hybridizing notes.  I believe it was Michael Berrigan who told me about their waterproof copy paper. I ordered it this year along with the waterproof labels.  The copy paper is for my daffodil and garden maps; I kept accidentally leaving them outside this spring and was just lucky they didn't get rained on.

Note: the labels say your laser printer must be designed for use with vinyl labels, to check your printer's manual (for laser printers that print from 4 pages per minute up to 35).
