1/2W-O trumpet color in the lower Midwest

Daffnet,

This image shows a host of orange trumpets (and borderlines) as they are currently flowering on my farm in SE Illinois; this is how they appear after flowering for a week in +80F temperature, full sun and very windy conditions, and two torrential rainstorms (hence the mud splatter on the bottom flower).   They have been in the ground between two and ten years.

Left side, top to bottom:  ‘Role Model’, ‘Tangerine Delight’, ‘Orange Sky’ .

Right side, top to bottom:  ‘Astute’, Delaney 1W-O seedling (Crown Gold x Pink Silk selection), and ‘Lutana’ (which has more color this year than usual).

‘Tangerine Delight’ had the best color, as witnessed by post-convention visitors to my Illinois farm yesterday afternoon. Of the many more varieties and seedlings I grow, it is still the whitest and orange-est I maintain, especially in this climate which can be extremely difficult for oranges and reds.

My seedling was on its last day before collapse, hence its wilted petals in this photo.  It will be lined out again this fall and ultimately, hopefully, introduced.  It has exceptional form, coming from ‘Pink Silk’.
