More Autumn Flowers

The first photo is of  two more from Bill Welch’s “Autumn Colors Group’. Nice clean flowers with brightly colored cups.

This was a white tazetta of Bill’s that I also selected. These are the first florets to open. I count 10 buds in the cluster. It shows what great smooth petal shape can be achieved in this section.

The next two pictures are from one of my 2013 introductions ‘Autumn Crinkle’. This was bred from the old ‘Gloriosus’ with a selected N. elegans. This cultivar has a peculiarity have have only encountered a few times before, and in tazettas only. The florets open with a smooth corona but as the florets age the corona gets ever more crinkled. My guess is that thus cultivar like its smoother siblings is fertile and perhaps I should pollinate it this year and see what happens to its offspring.

Finally some green’s, both are ‘Emerald Sea’ progeny.  The one like a green windmill is from the back cross of N. viridiflorus onto ‘Emerald Sea’ and has more green in the perianth. This will have 3 florets on the stem eventually.

The last is from a new cross of ‘Emerald Sea’ by ‘Lima’s Green Success’ and has a much larger and flatter perianth than ‘Emerald Sea’. However, the tepals are still on the skimpy side. This is the first of a new cross and many others are still in bud. I hoped for wider petals. The flowers are quite large. Perhaps some of those still to flower will have wider petals.

  1. Love your Selections of Bill’s exceptional flowers! ‘Autumn Crinkle’ is very different and most intriguing! Love it!

  2. I to really like Autumn Crinkle.  Do you think it can grow either outside or in greenhouse in Western WA?  I currently do not have any fall flowering daffodils but if they can grow here I’d like to give them a try.

  3. They will grow and flower outside the first Fall but the Winter will probably kill them. If you have a greenhouse there should be no problem.

  4. I just spoke with a lovely lady in Texas who has Div 7 and DIv 8 blooming this week- perhaps Keith took some photos?
