Cold Weather on Daffodil Colors

With the extreme four day cold weather we had recently I’ve noticed some changes of colors on my hybridized daffodils this year.  Some of my Whites now have a yellow or orange ring on the end of the corona. Some other of my white hybrids are showing pink in the cup.  Some of my previous  light yellow cups look more pink this year.  I’ve noticed that some of my corona’s that were originally labeled to have a having an orange ring are this year all orange coronas.

My mother-in-law Marie Bozievich told me this would happen years ago, however, this year it is more noticeable than in previous years.  We are going to have 80 degree “F” in two more days. Any daffodil that in bloom when the heat hits will automatically dry out and it’s show quality is gone for the year.

  1. Clay – Two of your seedling I’m growing.  Hig 14-304 2W-WWP and Hig 14-28 2W-P.  The bulb marked 14-28 2W-P starts out as a 1W-Y and tunes into 1W-W and is very productive.

  2. Cold weather provides an amber cast to several cultivars including whites and straw yellows.  I have not seen this with the golden cultivars.  You may notice that the daffodils become crepey, this is due to uneven growth with temperature and water changes.  If you are concerned about this, pick the flowers and condition them inside a cool area and they will remain smooth and smaller than if they grew out in the heat.

  3. Mike, I’m not concerned about the changes in color this year. I have been in
daffodils long enough that it has happened in my garden before. I just
found it interesting that the cold caused so much change this year.

Bill, 14-304 is 2W-P this year in the cold. I’m sure it will be back to
    normal next year.

  4. Bill,

About my seedling.  I gave the ones in the picture below to the ADS convention.  It sold for a paltry $25.  I’d buy it back for more than that.

  5. Here in Cincinnati we experienced at least 2 nights in the 20’s.

This as ‘Twilight Zone’, a reverse bi-color 2YYW- WWY emerged and remained a 2YYW-YYO for about a week.

Then, one warm day in the 70’s it became true to it’s color code.

So, I’d say yes, cold can affect color.
